Amsterdam in a Day: What to See
Make the most of 24 hours in Amsterdam with this practical itinerary covering museums, canals, and local neighbourhoods.
One day in Amsterdam is not much, but the Dutch capital is compact enough that you can see a surprising amount if you plan well. This itinerary hits the essential highlights while leaving room to breathe and enjoy the city's atmosphere. The key is pre-booking your museum tickets, because queues will eat into your limited time.
Morning (9am to 12pm): Museum Quarter
Start at the Rijksmuseum (opens at 9am). This is the Netherlands' greatest museum, home to Rembrandt's Night Watch, Vermeer's Milkmaid, and thousands of other masterpieces. If time is tight, focus on the Gallery of Honour on the second floor, which you can see meaningfully in about an hour.
Walk across Museumplein to the Van Gogh Museum (pre-booked timed entry essential). The collection traces Van Gogh's artistic journey from dark Dutch beginnings through his explosive colour period in Arles. The Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles, and Almond Blossom are all here. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours.

Midday (12pm to 2pm): Jordaan Neighbourhood
Walk north through Vondelpark to the Jordaan, Amsterdam's most charming neighbourhood. The narrow streets are lined with independent boutiques, art galleries, and cosy brown cafes. Stop for lunch at a local cafe or grab a broodje (Dutch sandwich) to eat by the canal.
If it is a Saturday, the Noordermarkt farmers' market is one of the best in the city. Even on other days, the Nine Streets (Negen Straatjes) shopping area connecting the main canals is perfect for a wander.
Afternoon (2pm to 5pm): Canal Cruise and Dam Square
A canal cruise is non-negotiable in Amsterdam, even with limited time. A one-hour cruise gives you a completely different perspective on the city, gliding past 17th-century canal houses, under historic bridges, and through the UNESCO-listed Canal Ring. Many cruises include audio commentary explaining the history of the buildings you pass.
After the cruise, walk to Dam Square, the heart of Amsterdam. The Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis) dominates one side, and the National Monument on the other. The surrounding streets are Amsterdam's main shopping area.

Late Afternoon (5pm to 7pm): Anne Frank House or Exploration
If you managed to book Anne Frank House tickets (they sell out weeks ahead and are released online), this is a profound and moving experience. The preserved hiding place where Anne wrote her diary during WWII takes about an hour to visit.
If you could not get tickets, use this time to explore at your own pace. Options include the Begijnhof (a hidden medieval courtyard), the Bloemenmarkt (floating flower market), or cycling through Vondelpark.
Evening: De Pijp and Dinner
Head to De Pijp for dinner. This multicultural neighbourhood centres around the Albert Cuyp Market (open until 5pm) and has some of Amsterdam's best restaurants, from Surinamese to Indonesian to modern Dutch. Foodhallen in Amsterdam-West is another great option, with 20+ food stalls under one roof.
End your day at a brown cafe (bruine kroeg), the traditional Amsterdam pub. These wood-panelled, candlelit bars have been serving locals for centuries. Order a biertje (small beer) and a bitterbal (deep-fried meat croquette) for the authentic experience.
Practical Tips
- Pre-book the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House online. They sell out days or weeks in advance.
- Buy an OV-chipkaart (transport card) or use contactless payment on trams. A day ticket costs about 9 euros.
- Rent a bike only if you are confident cycling in traffic. Amsterdam's bike culture is fast-paced and locals do not brake for tourists.
- Most museums and restaurants accept card payment. Cash is rarely needed.
- The Red Light District is safe to walk through but be respectful. Photography of workers is not permitted.
