Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens at sunrise

Athens 2-Day Itinerary: Acropolis, Museum, Sunset

Two days is enough for Athens if you book the Acropolis early and pace the food tour right. Full itinerary inside.

Published: 17 May 2026

Athens punches above its weight as a 2-day city. The Acropolis, its museum, the Plaka neighbourhood, and a sunset cruise are genuinely all you need to feel you've experienced it.

Day 1: Ancient Athens

Start at the Acropolis for opening at 8am via the south slope entrance (skip the main gate queue). A guided tour adds context you'll miss on your own. Allow 2.5 hours including the climb and main monuments.

Walk down to the Acropolis Museum (8 min walk). This is one of the best-designed museums in the world; the top floor has a glass-walled gallery aligned with the Parthenon. Allow 2 hours.

Lunch in Plaka. Afternoon: wander Plaka and Anafiotika (the Cycladic village hidden inside Athens). Evening: dinner in Psyri.

Day 2: Markets, Coast, Sunset

Morning at Central Market (Varvakeios) and a food tour through downtown Athens. Late lunch at a souvlaki spot in Monastiraki.

Afternoon: take the tram to Vouliagmeni Lake or the coast. Most travellers prefer the Athens Riviera sunset cruise which leaves from Flisvos Marina in the early evening and includes dinner.

Evening: rooftop bar near Monastiraki for sunset views over the lit-up Acropolis.

Where to stay

Best base is Plaka or Monastiraki for walking access to ancient sites and great food. Koukaki (south side of Acropolis) is quieter and excellent value.

What to skip on a 2-day trip

Day trips to Delphi, Cape Sounion, or the islands. Save those for a longer trip. Two days is essentials-only.
