Best Time to Visit the Colosseum (2026)
Peak Colosseum crowds can stretch the standard queue to 2+ hours. Here is when to go and what to expect by month.
The Colosseum gets 7.5 million visitors a year. Most of them seem to arrive at the same time. Timing your visit well makes the difference between a magical experience and 90 sweaty minutes of queueing.
The quietest times of day
Best: 8:30-9am opening. Get inside before tour groups arrive (most start around 10am). The light is also gorgeous for photos.
Second-best: 4pm onwards in summer (open to 7:15pm). Day-trip groups have left for buses. The Forum next door is also softer-lit and quieter.
Worst: 10am-2pm. Coach tours and cruise ship groups overlap. Standard ticket queue can hit 2 hours in July-August.
Best months
April-May and September-October are the sweet spot: weather is 18-25ยฐC, queues are shorter than summer, prices haven't peaked. November-March means smaller crowds and lower prices but rain risk and shorter hours.
Avoid: mid-July to late August. Temperatures hit 35ยฐC+, the Colosseum has minimal shade, and crowds are at their worst.
Days of the week
Tuesdays and Wednesdays are quieter than weekends. The first Sunday of the month is FREE entry (no booking, brutal queues, avoid).
Booking advice
Regardless of timing, book a skip-the-line ticket in advance. The standard ticket queue is unpredictable; skip-the-line cuts the wait to under 15 minutes year-round.
