Tower of London vs Westminster Abbey: Which is the Better Day Out?

Why the Tower of London wins

Tombs include Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, Henry V, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Stephen Hawking. Poets’ Corner has Chaucer, Dickens, and Tennyson buried within steps of each other.

It is more reflective than thrilling. There is no cafeteria atmosphere, no jokes from guides, just a beautiful Gothic interior packed with history. A guided walking tour is the best way to do it because the layout is confusing and the most interesting tombs are not signposted clearly.

Practical day plans

Half-day option: Tower of London 9am to 12:30pm. You see the Crown Jewels at opening (no queue), join the 11am Beefeater tour, and explore the walls. Lunch at Borough Market.
