Budapest Food Tour: Markets and Local Cuisine
Hungarian cuisine is one of Europe's great underrated food traditions, and this tour is the tastiest way to discover it. Starting at the magnificent Great Market Hall, a cathedral of cast iron and coloured tiles built in 1897, your food-loving local guide introduces you to the ingredients and flavours that define Hungarian cooking. Sample paprika-rich goulash from a market stall, taste freshly baked langos (fried dough topped with sour cream and cheese), and try kolbasz sausage made to a recipe that has not changed in generations. From the market, walk through the streets of central Budapest stopping at a hidden courtyard restaurant for chicken paprikash, a traditional wine cellar for a tasting of Tokaji and Egri Bikaver (Bull's Blood), and a bakery for the iconic chimney cake, or kurtoskalacs. In total, you will enjoy eight food tastings and three drinks across six stops. By the end, you will have a deep appreciation for why Hungarians take their food so seriously.
